2-18 Penance

Craig: So here the Maintainer lays out the main thrust of the story. Leon, having cheated at Mythband, must now play the game fairly — or die in the attempt.
J.D.: But the Maintainer is not without mercy. If Leon does a good job of helping Lucky, he doesn’t have to die in the attempt. Because he’s certainly not likely to beat Mythband in the normal method.
Craig: The Maintainer adds insult to injury by making Lucky the key to easing his path through Mythband. Lucky just betrayed and abandoned him, and now he has to work with her if he wants to survive.
J.D.: In the Maintainer’s defense, he doesn’t necessarily know all of that just transpired.
Craig: You’re probably right. If he knew he’d be enjoying it even more.
J.D.: Point taken.
Craig: I love the Maintainer’s silhouette in panel 3. He conveys emotion even in his outline. 🙂
J.D.: I like panel 2. Ringo looked so fierce in the last page, and we find out that, like most dogs, he just wanted Leon’s breakfast.
Craig: And *unlike* most dogs, Ringo apparently has the ability to keep Leon from getting artifacts.
J.D.: He seems very happy about that. Or is it just because they’re talking about him that he’s wagging his tail?
Craig: It was great fun drawing the Halloween party in panel 5. As I recall, you designed Kate’s costume. I think I designed Lucky’s. She apparently decided to dress up as a fairy.
J.D.: And Aaron’s was a joint effort?
Craig: I don’t quite remember.
J.D.: What’s Aaron dressed as? 😀
Craig: That would be telling… 🙂

Um, since I am a pedant, I just thought I’d mention an English usage thing. You might want to double-check, but “flout,” not “flaunt,” seems to be the word you should have been using up there.

dean: You’re right, “flout” would be the correct word to use there. One of the perks of being an author is that I can blame my linguistic errors on my characters. See, English isn’t the Maintainer’s native language, and… 😉
Thanks for the correction.

There’s a problem here. If Leon can’t get any artifacts then neither can Lucky. Othervise they both can have artifacts.
Or maybe that is one of the lessons here. You need to learn to share. And Leon needs to teach that to Lucky.
I too like Ringo in panel two. Somehow that is just typical for a dog. Social, happy when someone is talking to it and it wants your breakfast.
Difference between dogs and cats:
Dog:
“It gives me food. It must be God”
Cat:
“It gives me food. I must be God”
