3-22 Too Early to Think
Friday, October 26th, 2007This week’s page will be delayed by a day or two while J.D. recovers from a migraine. Ouch! But here’s our commentary on last week’s page…
– Commentary –
Craig: For Halloween this year, J.D. dressed up as Lillith.
J.D.: Well, mostly. The time I truly dressed up as Lillith I wasn’t wearing the shift. That is to say, the blue piece. It was just the skirt and the bodice. I got a lot of compliments that year at GenCon. 🙂
Craig: Yeah, like that guy from the local newspaper (or so he said) who brought his video camera to interview you. Seemed he was always aiming a little low…
J.D.: I don’t remember him very clearly. But I do remember walking next to my sister-in-law, who is Kate-like beautiful, and hearing someone complimenting me in passing. That had never happened before.
Craig: I wasn’t able to dress up for Halloween this year because I was attending class on Thursday. But, I did dress up as the Maintainer (in human form) at GenCon. Here’s what my costume looked like.
J.D.: I sewed it!
Craig: Not nearly as cool as J.D.’s costume.
J.D.: Hey! I made that for you! By hand!
Craig: Well, I don’t fill it out as nicely as you do yours. 🙂
J.D.: This picture of you in your costume is really cool because the way the wind is blowing your braids look like they’re kind of writhing.
Craig: So anyway, I was trying out lots of different ideas for the Phial when J.D. reminded me that we’d already drawn it back on page 1-20, when Cronk discovered it after killing a Grey icky thing.
J.D.: The Phial, by the way, at least the Tolkienien Phial, is filled with light. The light of Eärendil’s star, which was in turn the light of one of the Silmarils, contained within the waters of Galadriel’s fountain.
Craig: In Mythband, the Phial was discovered by Cronk, who swiftly met his end at the hands of Leon’s “Mage”. Then Mage was slain by Pukarith the Terrible, and the Phial was lost for a time. Then Lucky found it.
J.D.: I love the questions Lucky asks Lillith about the Phial. They’re the kind of questions I used to ask about the items dropped by the creatures of Angband, because I was used to role-playing games, where the treasure horde of a creature was taken into account when you were battling it. I later learned that the game generated the treasure upon the death of the creature.
Craig: I had fun writing this page because Lucky and Lillith are having completely parallel conversations, that don’t really interact with each other.
J.D.: It’s funny to me that Lucky at the end says she’s going to look for a quest, when she could have taken Lillith’s speech as a quest to find Leon.
Craig: My favorite part about this page is how the general store is completely sold out of just about everything. The only item sitting on the shelf is a bowl of hard biscuits.
J.D.: Even the beer is gone. Usually there are a few kegs on the shelf behind Lillith. Not today.
Craig: No wonder she’s in such a bad mood. 😀

Did Mythband exist in 1992? Or did they work together somewhere else?

A classic
Lucky and Lillith aren’t even listening to each other 😀 Yet Lucky thanks Lillith for her “help”
The Phial’s well drawn.

I guess Lucky will have to learn the hard way not to put on anything you haven’t identified……

This also shows how much of an obsession Mythband is becoming for Lucky, as she’s awake and playing not only during class but “at this ungodly hour” in the morning.
…which may lead to not being quite so awake during class, but that’s the nature of the beast… 😉

…what IS a phial, anyway ._.?
October 26th, 2007 at 10:08 pm
A phial is just a small glass container, typically containing liquid (eg. perfume). This particular phial must just contain … light, or something.
The obvious answer to Lucky’s problem is that Gorlum had the phial out of sight in his pocket. The obvious answer to Lillith’s problem is coffee. 😀

Damn. Is it possible to fall in love to a cartoon character? Lilith is just wonderful person :-). And she has genuine personality here.
Nice “dialog” there.

The Phial of Undeath
It appears like the Phial of Galadriel at first – but wait! It is a cursed phial created by an evil wizard to lure adventurers into wielding it unknowingly. It can be activated for ruination every 10+d10 turns if it is being worn. It provides light (radius 5) forever. It decreases your strength, intelligence, wisdom, dexterity, constitution, charisma and luck by 5. It allows you to breathe without air. It allows you to sense the presence of undead. It is cursed. It carries an ancient Morgothian curse. It cannot be harmed by acid, cold, lightning or fire.

Moo Hoo Ha Ha!
I hate it early in the game when you get to the general store and they are understocked, or stocked weirdly. No rations, but maybe some fine wine and hard biscuits… No flasks of oil, but an abundence of torchs… A plethora of arrows (+3, +5), but no unenchanted ones… No, normal cloaks, but a cloak of Aman [1 + 27], 75% off which you STILL don’t have the AU for…
Timo: I believe Lilith is modeled after a real person: J.D. but uh [ahem], I think she might be married.

Rob T:
Damn….hmmmm…well, it could be worse. It could be that she is _not_ modeled after a real person ;-P.
J.D, when you get bored about your husband, call me 🙂

I’m sure we covered this when Penance was in Dravens… Craig is the model for the Maintainer (the non-squid version), and J.D is the model for Lilith.
Anyway, the situation is as dire as it is hilarious: Craig, looks like you’ve been given notice!

Aww, why’d you have to spoil it? That little misunderstanding could have kept me amused for a week! 😀

Daaaaaaang, I think I’ve just been served!
J.D. dressed up as Lillith for Halloween this year. I was going to post the picture but… maybe I shouldn’t. 🙂

What did you dress as Craig? Did you manage to get some stick on face tentacles? I’ve always wanted some of those myself… Photos! Apologies for Timos’ imminent suffering.
I tried drawing a necromancer mind-flayer in my youth. Had a thin female with not four, but about a dozen tentacles white flesh and white eyes, and a kind of mock arcane tattoo in her forehead. Then I found out that there aren’t any female mind-flayers…

Hey, didn’t Cronk already find the Phial?
How do artifacts work in Mythband… can multiple people have the same artifact?

Delayed!
Hope you get well soon J.D. Think of your adoring fans! [like Timo]
