J.D.: It was a lot of fun to do. And I figured — why would the Maintainer bother scorching the floor and leaving evidence of what he had done, when he could do it in the air?
Craig: The Maintainer is *very tall*.
J.D.: Yes, yes he is. I’m always struck by that when I read this page. Because he hides himself as so much smaller than he really is.
Craig: It was a lot of fun drawing the Maintainer’s different expressions on this page. In panel 2 he is furious — his hair is writing in anger. In panel 3 —
J.D.: — he’s still furious? But now, vindicated furious.
Craig: In panel 4 he suddenly recoils into himself. He’s concerned, maybe even worried.
J.D.: I see almost fear.
Craig: And back to the present in panel 5, I see unbridled pleasure. He’s thoroughly enjoying tormenting Leon. And — it’s kind of wierd, but if you look carefully at the Maintainer’s eyes it appears that he is looking directly at Leon’s *brain*, not his eyes.
J.D.: Well, that will make more sense in a couple of pages. Suffice to say the Maintainer can tell what’s really going on in Leon’s head. He reads people very well.
Craig: The screenshot in panel 3 is from Angband 3.0.5. Although you can’t make out any details, that is indeed a 50th level high-elven ranger in the dungeon.
J.D.: Yep. You’re a computer nerd. Just like the Maintainer. Can’t let the screenshot pass without commenting on it. I wonder if the Maintainer checked out the screen afterward.
Craig: He probably did, if only to pick up the details of the wireless connection.
J.D.: Do you think he’ll disconnect Leon’s work or keep it up in the basement?
Craig: Hmmm… free wireless vs. … I don’t see a downside here.
J.D.: Well, it isn’t his wireless router. Or is he considering it a donation?
Craig: Well, you know, he’s just holding on to it while Leon’s on vacation in Mythband. š
J.D.: Vacation?!

To me it seems that Maintainer can change his size in his native form. In panel 3 he is definitely bigger than in panel 5.
Maintainer holding Leon above that circle reminds me about Rex Caligo holding Bryce in “iii – Very Helpful”. Except that Rex seems to be bigger.

Apparently it was Azriel that had that red aura. At least he (she?) did have that conversation at the same time Leon was in his way to Mythband, so it makes sense that it was his (hers?) aura that we see in panel 4.
