1-23 – Be My Guest

Craig: This page and the next one are my favorites in the series so far. Watching the Maintainer lose it gives me a special kind of happy.
J.D.: It’s a work of art. 🙂 I love watching the Maintainer’s hair.
Craig: That was all kinds of fun to draw. His hair writhes and moves according to his mood. And his mood right now is — infuriated.
J.D.: In the last few panels his eyes change. Some of our readers noted that his pupils look as though they’re going from zeros to ones.
Craig: Very insightful. I didn’t actually intend that when I was drawing the page, but it works.
J.D.: I loved shading his eyes. They’re so emotive and expressive, especially his true eyes.
Craig: It’s funny that this page marks where we left off in the original color series back in 2004.
J.D.: Yeah, that was page — six?
Craig: Yep, it took us 28 pages in the new format to get to the same place as six pages in the original format. But this is a lot deeper and explains much more of what’s going on. Reading the original pages was a bit of a whirlwind and kind of hard to understand.
J.D.: And less interesting, I think.
J.D.: I love the body language on Leon in panel 3. You did a great job with the shrug.
Craig: Thanks! I really like how you took my drawings in panel 2 and made them silhouettes against the green screen of Mythband. You took a static scene and made it dynamic, not to mention foreshadowing.
J.D.: I love foreshadowing.

I stumbled across this comic only in this format, but I must say, I enjoy this format quite a bit, probably better than the format I didn’t see.
I especially love the commentary, so when you make it past wherever the first version stopped, please don’t stop doing commentary.

Yes, the newer format is definitely much more compelling to keep following than the original. Those were beautifully done, but shallow in terms of story depth. I’d much rather keep the story going than see pretty colors. 🙂

Since most people reading are the kind of people who enjoy roguelikes, I’m willing to bet there are very few people who care for the graphical quality over story aspects. 🙂 (But in Penance, they’re both good!)

The dude’s hair looks like a squid’s tentacles. ..but it helps the character’s expressions, so that’s cool.
