1-8 – The Point of the Game
Sunday, January 28th, 2007– Commentary –
Craig: Wow. Kate looks great in this page.
J.D.: Kate always looks great. I’m jealous. She’s one of those people who can slap anything on and look fantastic. Although this page gives us a glimpse into the fact that Lucky can be just as obsessive as Leon, given something worth doing.
Craig: It’s true. Lucky shows a lot of tenacity in trying Mythband, considering how difficult it’s been so far. Really, I think people who enjoy roguelike games must have a tenacious streak in them. Being forced to start over every time your character dies is very unlike modern games, which hold your hand through the beginning levels to get you used to the game. Angband in particular is very cruel to new players.
J.D.: I like Lucky’s observation to the Maintainer at the end. I think I said that almost verbatim when I started playing.
Craig: Even in other games, it’s strange how you’re the One Destined to Save the World, and the Only Hope of all Mankind, and yet the shopkeeps won’t even cut you a break!
J.D.: Oh, you mean like when the king sends you out to rescue his beloved daughter with a wooden sword and not enough cash to buy a slab of meat at the store?
Craig: The king must go through a lot of would-be heroes. Maybe that’s part of the interview process for inevitably marrying his daughter by the end of the game.
J.D.: What, luck?
Craig: And tenacity. If I was told to go rescue my king’s daughter from a dragon-infested keep given only a wooden sword I’d be applying for foreign citizenship.
J.D.: I love how Lucky is not amused in the final panel. … I think I would have made Kate’s hair less tall if I were to do this page again.
Craig: It’s very tall. Her hair must be really, really long.
J.D.: Not to mention hair-sprayed up about a foot and a half. But hey, I remember when that was the in thing.
Craig: If Kate’s wearing it, it is the in-thing.

“…then why are the townsfolk trying to kill me?!” I laughed at that line quite a bit the first time I read it. It’s a fairly good question. The logical reason is that the REAL townsfolk stay indoors and those outside are actually minions of the Great Evil.

no, no… it’s not a matter of laughing. It makes pretty much no difference to the life of your normal townsperson whether there’s a Great Evil down in the dungeon, not when they don’t have enough money to have a good life even if the Evil is beaten. They kill the adventurers for the money, to be sure.

Maybe Kate’s hair is having a anime moment.

Haha. You are all wrong about the townsfolk. They don’t care whether you succeed or not simply because none of the monsters have figured out how to climb the stairs.

They can’t climb the stairs… and yet… the evil is terrible, powerful… and threatening everyone in the world. Haha!

I want a T-shirt that says, “Why Are The Townsfolk Trying To Kill Me?”
