3-30 The Very Image
Friday, January 11th, 2008Commentary on 3-30 “The Very Image”
J.D.: Even after Leon loses his pinkness, he still keeps his nice hair.
Craig: To be frank, I prefer his pre-Mythband hair. I loved drawing the greasy, lank locks. It looked like Leon had far more important things to do than wash his hair.
J.D.: And by “important” you mean “play Mythband?”
Craig: Many a shower in college was sacrificed for the sake of Moria and Angband. When I first started playing Moria, I stayed up ’till past 3am every night carefully cataloguing the identity of every potion and item I found. It wasn’t until later that I discovered the game does it for you… 🙂
J.D.: I was more apt to stay up till 3am MUDding, so I guess I’m more on the Lucky side of things.
Craig: Several of our readers commented on the placement of Ignatius’s image in panel 5. It wasn’t in the original storyboard. I added it when I pencilled the panel. I did so for two reasons. First, the panel with just Leon’s head in it was unbalanced, and looked odd. Second, Leon’s head by itself put too much emphasis on his expression, when it was actually his resemblence to Ignatius that I wanted to highlight. Also, I just thought it looked cool. 🙂
J.D.: The similarity really is striking when they’re placed side by side like that. And there’s no reason to assume that the last time Lillith saw Ignatius was when he was a young man. Besides, if you draw Ignatius young it just looks like you drew Leon twice.
Craig: Heh. I think I’ve mentioned it before, but when I draw Ignatius, I first draw Leon, then add the signs of age and darken his expression.
J.D.: I like panel 4 of this comic because it really gives the impression of how strong Lillith is, that she pulls Leon down to look at him and there’s nothing he can do about it.
Craig: We got hints of Lillith’s strength before, too, when she pulled Leon out of the portal by his chains in the Hall of Portals. I also like panel 5 because Lillith’s comment reads almost like a prayer.
J.D. Who says it wasn’t? Marcus talked the same way when he was leaving the basement with Ignatius.
Craig: And as a parting note, I just have to say that Leon calling Azriel a “poser” cracks me up every time I read it.
J.D.: And I just love how Lillith calls him back to himself in panel 2 with a very matronly gesture. 🙂

I love her earrings (but hate the HTML implementation keeping me from using the heart symbol). Way cool. Now that the Maintainer & wife (spacing her name for the moment) are about to twig on, things are going to get very interesting, very fast.

Nice to see Penance back. Leon needs to get a good helmet before going into the dungeon…

Ah, the plot thickens…

So how often is Leon going to be able to access this power? Can he use it in the dungeon? Was Lillith’s text switching back and forth between regular and the black/pink text because only one person can use it at a time?
Ah, these are the things I can’t wait to find out as the story develops.
OH! And can Leon read Elvish now?

I think that text switching colors is caused by Lilith losing control / using her powers. She is changing in last panel. Look at her eyes. She seems to be some sort of vampire like Marcus. (it was visible earlier too when Leon had a cut and Lilith wiped her head clean.
Should that first panel read “Loser”. Or is Leon really commenting “Poser”?
BTW. Penancecomic.com has been rather difficult to reach time to time. Something wrong in server?

Timo: “Poser” is correct. It’s a slang term meaning someone who tries very hard to appear impressive.
Thanks for letting me know about the server availability.

Noticed a tiny inconsistence. Lilith doesn’t know Ignatius is alive, much less how he looks now. AFAIK. So that “very image” panel should show Ignatius as young man, instead of white-haired old man.

Not necessarily Timo. The panel isn’t stating that’s what Lilith is imagining, it in fact might mean to break the 4th wall and simply show the audience how similar Leon and Ignatus are in facial appearance. After all Ignatus still looks like Leon even when he is shown in youth.

Well, yes. Ignatius as a young man should look _more_ like Leon, not less. Obviously. And that resemblance has already been noticed by us many chapters before. And Ignatius himself said that Leon is his relative (was it “grandson” he used?).
Stating obvious to readers/viewers is something I don’t like. But it is unfortunately quite usual in US movies for some reason. I hope Graig an J.D. don’t fall to that too. And for that reason I hope this is just a mistake, not deliberately made for viewers.

Heh. Didn’t leon cut his finger when he was in the basement?
January 18th, 2008 at 9:18 am
Didn’t he also claim to “return to Mythband a triumphant hero tonight, to claim my birthright !” .. or something like that 😉
Ok, he got there, and in trouble “thanks” to his birth rights .. only has to work on the “triumphant” and “hero” part I guess .. 🙂

He sure did. Bled on a nice old contract too. The story is really developing now. Keeps you on the edge of your seat for a week waiting for the next strip.
